As a Dispatcher for the City, you will receive emergency calls from the public and dispatch police or contact other emergency agencies, as appropriate, and interact frequently with external public and department personnel.
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
- Receive calls requesting immediate request for emergency services: police, medical, fire, as well as after-hours water and street emergencies, and animal welfare services.
- Dispatch police or contact appropriate agencies/personnel; effectively interface with callers to obtain required information and provide reassurance, as necessary.
- Accurately complete related department logs and records regarding emergency call activities.
- Receive non-emergency calls from the public: provide directions, information, or other assistance, as requested.
- Visually and audibly monitor persons arrested and detained in holding cells: call for assistance when disturbances occur within holding cell areas.
- Provide administrative support to the department: type letters; maintain and update designated logs, files, and maps; make copies, fax information and correspondence.
- Maintain and update various department computer databases used to track statistical data and records.
- Assists in implementation and operation of audio/visual cable television system.
- Clean and perform routine maintenance of the communications center.
- Obtain Telecommunicator license with State of Texas and maintain in-service training and certification levels as required by the department.
- Other duties as assigned.
If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have general knowledge of dispatcher policies, procedures, and practices. This is a 24 hour a day 7 day a week job that is broken into 12 hour shifts, to include working evenings and some weekends and holidays.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Sound working knowledge of department dispatch/communications policies, procedures, and practices; related City ordinances and state and federal laws; and pertinent jurisdictions for police and fire services.
Must qualify for and obtain TLETS and TCIC/NCIC Terminal Operator Certification within six months of employment and qualify for and obtain Basic Telecommunicator Proficiency Certificate for Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within twelve months.
Previous law enforcement experience preferred.
Benefits Overview:
- ****Sign-On BONUS**** $1,000 for non-TCOLE certified and $2,000 for TCOLE certified.
- 10 hours of vacation leave per month, 3 weeks per year.
- 8 hours of sick leave per month, 12 days per year.
- Sick leave incentive pay- Employees are compensated in December each year in the amount of 25% of their unused sick leave that they have accumulated during the preceding fiscal year.

- Dental benefits are provided at zero premium cost to the employee.
- 24 hours of paid personal holiday leave each fiscal year.
- 10 wellness hours each fiscal year for eligible preventive and mental health services.
- Longevity pay of $8 per month beginning with the first anniversary and will be paid on a separate paycheck in December of each year.
- Retirement plan includes a 7% contribution of an employee's gross salary to the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a City contribution match of 2 to 1 (14%) at retirement.
- Retirement eligibility requires 5 years of service at age 60 or 20 years of service at any age.
- Employees also have an additional retirement fund option to participate in a 457 plan.
- Long-Term Disability is employer-paid and covers 60% of the employee's salary up to $7,500.
- Military leave provides up to 15 days of paid leave per fiscal year for eligible employees.
- Education reimbursement assistance up to $5,000 per fiscal year.
- Employer-paid basic term life insurance policy two (2) times an employee's base salary, up to $325,000 maximum.
- 40 paid service hours are available to volunteer within our community.
- Up to 160 hours of paid parental leave to eligible employees following the birth of an employee's child or the placement of a child with an employee in connection with adoption, foster care, or other legal placement to care for and bond with the child.
